You've probably seen live edge furniture even if you didn't know the name. It's the table, bench or bed where one edge of the timber still follows the natural shape of the tree, curves and all. No two pieces are ever the same.

Here's what live edge actually means, what to look for, and how to make it work in your home.

What does live edge mean?

When a tree is milled into boards, the outside edges are usually cut off to make straight, square timber. A live edge piece keeps one or both of those natural outer edges.

The bark is usually removed, but the shape of the tree stays. You'll see the curves, dips and flow of the trunk exactly as it grew. It's furniture that shows you where it came from.

Why people love it

  • Every piece is one of a kind. Because it follows the shape of an individual tree, your piece won't look exactly like anyone else's.
  • It brings nature inside. Live edge feels organic and calm, which is a big part of why it suits Australian homes so well.
  • It's a conversation starter. Guests always run their hands along the edge.
  • It celebrates the timber. Instead of hiding the natural character of the wood, it puts it front and centre.

A little history

Live edge furniture has been around for a long time, but it's most closely linked with the American woodworker George Nakashima, who made it famous in the mid-1900s. His philosophy was to let each tree's natural form guide the design, and that idea still shapes live edge furniture today.

What to look for in a live edge piece

Properly dried timber. Timber moves as it dries. Good live edge furniture is made from timber that's been dried carefully so it stays stable in your home. Ask the maker how it was dried.

A smooth, sealed edge. The natural edge should feel smooth to touch, with no loose bark or rough spots that could splinter.

Honest natural features. Small cracks, knots and gum veins are part of the charm. Sometimes makers add small "butterfly" or "bow tie" joints across a crack to stabilise it. Done well, they look beautiful and show real craftsmanship.

Solid timber all the way through. Some products copy the live edge look with veneer or resin. If you want the real thing, make sure it's solid timber.

How to style live edge furniture

The trick is to let the live edge be the star.

  • Pair it with clean lines. Simple bedding, plain walls and minimal side tables stop the room feeling busy.
  • Keep the palette natural. Linen, wool, stone, ceramics and greenery all sit beautifully next to a natural edge.
  • Don't over-accessorise. One or two objects on a surface is plenty.
  • Light it well. A lamp or window that catches the edge shows off the grain and the shape.

Live edge in the bedroom

Live edge isn't just for dining tables. In a bedroom, it adds warmth and a sense of calm that's hard to get any other way.

Our Kobe Live Edge bed is built around this idea. It's our best-selling bed, handcrafted to order in Melbourne from solid Australian Messmate or Tasmanian oak. A wide timber headboard shows off the natural character of the grain, and the base sits on a recessed frame so the bed appears to float. It comes in queen, king and super king sizes, is finished in a clear lacquer and is backed by a 5-year manufacturer's warranty.

Caring for live edge furniture

Live edge pieces need the same care as any solid timber furniture, with a little extra attention to the edge itself.

  • Dust the edge with a soft cloth or brush, as dust can settle in the curves.
  • Wipe spills straight away and dry the surface.
  • Keep it out of harsh direct sun and away from heaters to help the timber stay stable.
  • Skip the sprays and polishes. The Kobe Live Edge is finished in a clear lacquer, so a wipe with a damp microfibre cloth is all it needs. For sticky marks, use a little diluted natural soap, then follow with a clean damp cloth.

Is live edge right for you?

If you love natural materials and want a piece with real character, live edge is hard to beat. If you prefer a perfectly uniform, minimal look, a clean-edged solid timber piece might suit you better.

The best way to decide is to see one in person. The Kobe Live Edge is on display in our Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Gold Coast showrooms, all open by appointment. Can't make it in? Book a video call and our team will show it to you up close.

Common questions

What is live edge furniture?
Furniture that keeps the natural outer edge of the tree instead of cutting it straight. Each piece follows the shape of the original tree.

Does live edge include the bark?
Usually not. The bark is removed, but the natural shape of the edge underneath is kept.

Is live edge furniture durable?
Yes, as long as it's made from properly dried solid timber. It's just as strong as any other solid timber furniture.

Why does live edge furniture sometimes have cracks or butterfly joints?
Cracks are a natural part of timber. Butterfly joints are small inlaid pieces of wood used to stabilise a crack, and they're a sign of careful craftsmanship.
