What is Blackbutt?

Blackbutt is a large Australian hardwood best known for its use in flooring and construction, but it also makes excellent, hardwearing furniture. In most interiors, Blackbutt refers to Eucalyptus pilularis, commonly called Coastal Blackbutt, grown in New South Wales and southern Queensland.

At The Acacia Tree, we choose Blackbutt when we want light, natural timber with serious durability, ideal for busy family homes, coastal locations and spaces that need furniture to really earn its keep.

What does Blackbutt timber look like?

Blackwood ranges from golden and honey browns through to warm mid browns and deeper chocolate tones, often with lighter or reddish highlights.

The grain is fine to medium and can show natural figure or fiddleback, giving it a rich, luxurious look.

Is Blackbutt a good timber for furniture?

Yes. Australian Blackwood is highly regarded for furniture thanks to its
balance of durability, workability and striking appearance.

It is commonly used in quality furniture, cabinetry and even musical instruments.

Does Blackbutt change colour over time?

Yes. Blackwood generally deepens and enriches in colour over time, especially
with exposure to natural light, developing a soft, aged patina.

Avoiding intense, uneven sunlight on one spot will help it age more evenly.

Is Blackbutt sustainable?

When sourced via responsible suppliers, Blackwood can be a sustainable
choice.

It may be harvested under strict regulations in Australian forests and
is increasingly grown in plantations, including New Zealand, reducing pressure on native stands.

Buying Blackwood furniture from The Acacia Tree supports certified supply chains and long term replanting initiatives.
